Choosing a coffee machine

The machine that suits you depends on how many milk drinks you make, how much control you want over the shot, and how much bench space you have. Here's how the main types compare.

Single boiler machines

One boiler handles both brewing and steaming, so you switch between the two. They're the simplest way into real espresso and suit one or two coffees at a time. Many, like the Profitec GO 2.0 and ECM Casa V, add PID control for a stable brew temperature.

Heat exchanger machines

These brew and steam at the same time from one large steam boiler, with a heat exchanger feeding the group. Classic E61 machines such as the Profitec Pro 500 PID are a favourite for households that make several milk drinks back to back.

Dual boiler machines

Separate brew and steam boilers, each with its own temperature control. They're the most consistent choice if you want to fine-tune your espresso and steam milk without waiting, like the Lelit Elizabeth V3 and Profitec Pro 600.

Lever machines

A spring or manual lever replaces the pump, giving a gentler, more hands-on extraction. Our range includes hand-built lever machines from ACS and Nurri.

How much to spend

  • Under $1,500: quality single boiler machines that make genuine café-style espresso at home.
  • $1,500–$3,500: PID single boilers, heat exchangers and entry dual boilers, where most home baristas land.
  • $3,500 and up: premium dual boilers, flow and pressure profiling, and hand-built lever machines.

Whatever you spend, budget for a good grinder too. Fresh, consistent grinding makes more difference to the cup than almost anything else. See our coffee grinders.

Try before you buy

Our showrooms in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Hobart, Newcastle and Kiama have dozens of machines set up and running. Bring your usual coffee order and we'll show you how each machine handles it. Prefer a shortlist? Read our technicians' best home coffee machines picks.

Service and support after you buy

We service and repair what we sell, in our own workshop, and stock genuine spare parts for every major brand. As the Australian distributor for Profitec, Ascaso, ACS and Hottop, we support those machines directly.

Coffee machine FAQs

What's the difference between a coffee machine and an espresso machine?

In our range they're the same thing: machines that brew espresso under pressure and steam milk. We don't sell pod or capsule machines.

Do I need a separate grinder?

Yes, for best results. Pre-ground coffee goes stale quickly and can't be adjusted to dial in your shot.

Single boiler, heat exchanger or dual boiler?

One or two milk drinks a day: single boiler. Several in a row: heat exchanger. Most control and no waiting: dual boiler.

Can I see a machine before I buy?

Yes. Visit any of our showrooms to compare machines side by side.

Who services my machine?

Our own technicians, at our service centre.
