BWT water filters for coffee machines
BWT stands for Best Water Technology. The company was founded in 1990 and is headquartered in Mondsee, Austria, where it focuses on treating water for homes, hospitality and industry.
Why water matters for espresso
A cup of espresso is mostly water, so what is in your tap water shapes both flavour and machine life. Hard water leaves limescale that clogs boilers and valves, while heavily chlorinated water can taste flat or off. Hardness varies a lot across Australian cities and even between suburbs, so it is worth finding out what comes out of your tap.
Magnesium cartridges
BWT magnesium cartridges filter the water and release magnesium into it, at about 25 to 30 mg per litre, to help reduce limescale in your espresso machine. Each cartridge is rated to filter up to 120 litres, so how long it lasts depends on how much coffee you make.
Getting started with the jug
Soak a new cartridge in tap water for around five minutes before fitting, then discard the first jug. Any black specks are harmless activated carbon that flushes out. Replace the cartridge on schedule, as an exhausted cartridge stops doing its job. These filters improve taste and reduce scale, but they do not make unsafe water safe to drink.
A jug is ideal for machines filled from a water tank. If your machine is plumbed in directly, ask us about inline filtration instead. Check your machine's manual for its water guidance, and call the Jetblack team or visit a showroom for help choosing a filter.
