Gene Cafe coffee roasters

Roasting your own coffee at home gets you the freshest beans possible and the chance to roast exactly to your taste. Gene Cafe roasters are built for that kind of hobby, with a design that suits people who want hands on control without stepping up to a commercial drum roaster.

How the roaster works

The roasting chamber is a glass cylinder that rotates on an off axis, tumbling the beans while hot air passes through them. That motion helps keep the roast even, and the clear chamber lets you watch the colour change from green to yellow to brown, which is half the fun. Time and temperature are set with physical dials, and the controls can be adjusted while the roast is in progress. Some models can also connect to an optional app for profile logging.

Batch size

Home roasters are designed for small batches, and the larger models take roughly up to 300g of green coffee per roast. That is enough for a few days of home drinking, not a week of supply, so factor in how often you are prepared to roast. A log of your batch size, beans and settings makes it much easier to repeat a roast you enjoyed.

Ventilation

Roasting produces smoke and chaff, especially at darker roast levels, so plan where you will use it. The chaff collector can take a vent attachment for duct tubing, and a range hood, an open window or a vent pipe all help. Choose a bench near ventilation, and never leave the roaster unattended while it runs.

What to look for

Think about batch size, how much hands on control you want, whether you value app logging, and where the roaster will live. Also allow for green beans, a way to cool and store roasted coffee, and a bit of patience while you learn.

Yes. Roasting produces smoke and chaff, particularly at darker roast levels. Place it under a range hood, near an open window or connect duct tubing to the chaff collector. Never leave a roaster unattended while it is running.

No. Time and temperature are set with physical dials on the front. An optional Bluetooth app adds profile saving and roast logging, but the roaster works without it.

Yes, for keen beginners. The glass chamber lets you see each stage, and the controls let you adjust heat during the roast. Keep a log of each batch so you can learn what to change next time.
