VST baskets and measuring tools

VST is known for equipment that takes the guesswork out of espresso. At Jetblack that means two things: filter baskets made to tight standards and a refractometer for measuring what ends up in the cup.

Precision baskets

Standard baskets can vary from one to the next. VST checks its baskets after production, optically measures the holes and supplies a data sheet with each one. The aim is even water flow across the puck, which makes it easier to repeat a recipe. Sizes here run from 15g to 22g.

The VST Refractometer

A refractometer measures how much dissolved coffee is in a sample, shown as a TDS percentage. Combine that with your dose and the weight of the drink and you can calculate extraction yield. The usual advice is a few drops through a filter for espresso. It is a tool for dialling in and for cafes, and is rarely essential at home.

Choosing and fitting

Pick a basket for the dose your coffee and portafilter suit, not the biggest number. The baskets are 58mm, so check your machine before ordering.

Why buy from Jetblack

Our showrooms in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Hobart, Newcastle and Kiama can help you compare options, and the workshop can advise on fit.

Frequently asked questions

VST checks its baskets after production, measures the hole sizes optically and includes a data sheet with each one. That quality control gives more uniform holes and a tighter fit than many standard baskets. The aim is more even flow and easier, more repeatable results.

They are 58mm baskets, which suits most commercial-size portafilters, but fit still varies by machine and portafilter. Check the basket diameter and depth against your current one. If you are unsure, contact the team with your machine model before ordering.

It measures the percentage of dissolved coffee solids in a sample, known as TDS. With your dose and the weight of the drink, you can work out extraction yield. Many baristas aim for around 18 to 22 percent extraction as a reference when dialling in.

Not usually. Taste, a scale and a timer get most home baristas very close. A refractometer helps if you want numbers behind your tasting, are comparing coffees or train staff. It also takes practice to filter samples consistently, so it suits the curious.

Match the basket to the dose you want to brew with, and make sure your portafilter holds it. Smaller baskets suit lighter doses and bigger ones suit heavier doses. If you are unsure where to start, ask the team what suits your coffee and grinder.
