Choosing a portafilter, filter holder or dosing ring
Whether you are replacing a damaged handle or upgrading to a bottomless style, the first job is matching the holder to your group head.
Check the fit first
A 58mm label does not guarantee a fit. Lug count, lug thickness and the angle of the slot in the group head all vary between brands. Two-lug holders are common on E61 machines, while other brands use different layouts, so match your exact machine or an existing handle rather than relying on size alone.
Spouted, bottomless or pod
Spouted holders hide minor flaws and split the flow neatly into two cups. Bottomless holders show the stream from below, which makes channelling and uneven tamping easy to see. Some machines also take an ESE pod filter holder if you want pod convenience.
Where dosing rings fit in
A dosing ring sits on top of the basket and catches grounds that would otherwise miss. It also leaves room to stir or use a WDT tool before tamping. Rings are made for particular basket diameters, so check the size first.
