Kaffelogic home coffee roasters
Kaffelogic is a Dunedin start-up in New Zealand that spent years developing a roaster that behaves more like a laboratory instrument than a kitchen gadget. The Nano 7 is a small air roaster built for people who want to roast green beans themselves and get consistent results from batch to batch.
How the Nano 7 works
The roaster blows hot air through the beans in a roast chamber that sits on top of the base, which holds the heater, fan and electronics. A roast follows a stored profile, which works like a recipe telling the machine when to add heat and when to ease off. You choose a profile, select the roast level and bean weight, and press start. A typical roast takes around 8 to 12 minutes, followed by a cooldown.
Profiles and Studio software
Profiles can be loaded from a USB stick, and the free Kaffelogic Studio software lets you edit them and review the logs of previous roasts. The controls are organised in levels of difficulty, so a beginner can start with a few simple settings and move on as confidence grows. You can roast coffee ready to drink, or choose a profile designed for coffee that rests for a few days first.
Batch size and where to roast
Batches are small, in the order of 100 grams, which is ideal for trying new origins without committing to a big bag. Roasting makes smoke and chaff, so set the roaster up near a window or under an extraction fan, and keep it away from smoke detectors.
Why roast at home
Green beans keep far longer than roasted coffee, so you can buy a few origins and roast only what you will drink that week. Come and talk to the Jetblack team or visit a showroom to find out how roasting fits alongside your espresso setup.
