Heating Elements, Thermostats and Pressurestats

Three parts decide how your machine heats up and how steady it stays. The element supplies the heat, and the thermostat or pressurestat switches it on and off, so a failure in any of them shows up as a cold machine, unstable temperature or one that overheats.

Heating Elements

Elements are listed by diameter, wattage and the connection type, for example 1 inch or 1 1/4 inch bodies and spade connectors. Machine-specific elements for Bezzera, Cimbali Junior and Vibiemme sit beside universal sizes, with gaskets sold separately where they are needed.

Thermostats

A thermostat is a simple temperature switch. On simpler machines one controls brew temperature and another holds steam pressure at a higher setting, and a resettable safety cutout steps in if the primary control fails. When replacing one, match the trip temperature printed on the body, the contact type, the reset type and the mounting style.

Pressurestats

A pressurestat switches according to boiler pressure rather than temperature and is common on heat exchanger and commercial machines. Models such as the Mater Xp110 and Xp700 and the Expobar E608D are listed here.

Choosing and Fitting

Always unplug and let the machine cool before any work. Our workshop services espresso machines, and our team can help you confirm the right rating.

Frequently asked questions

Match the voltage, wattage, body diameter and connection type, and check whether your machine needs a particular gasket. If you are not sure, send the model of your machine and our team can help confirm the right element.

A thermostat reacts to temperature, while a pressurestat reacts to boiler pressure. Thermostats are common on simpler single boiler machines, and pressurestats are common on heat exchanger and commercial machines.

We would not recommend it. The trip temperature, contact type, reset type and mounting all need to match, or the part may not fit or may switch at the wrong point. Use the rating printed on your existing thermostat.

Common causes are a failed element, a faulty thermostat or pressurestat, or a tripped safety cutout. Switch off and unplug before checking anything. If you are not sure, our workshop can diagnose the fault.

These parts handle mains power and pressure, so they should only be replaced by someone confident with that work. Unplug the machine and let it cool fully first. Otherwise, bring it to our workshop and we can fit them.
