Choosing Espresso Machine Gaskets
Gaskets seal the joins in your machine, and they live a hard life, flexing and heating with every shot. Which one you need depends on where it sits, what it is made from and its exact size.
Types and Materials
Group gaskets are commonly rubber, often EPDM, or silicone, which tolerates heat well and can last longer. Teflon or PTFE rings are used where a firm, heat-resistant seal is needed, such as around elements and mushroom assemblies. Copper washers seal fittings when tightened, so they are usually replaced whenever a fitting is opened.
Getting the Size Right
Sizes appear in the titles, for example 57X42.2X3.2, so measure your old gasket's outside diameter, inside diameter and thickness. Many E61 group gaskets are around 8mm or 8.5mm, but some machines have their own profiles. If your machine is not an E61, check before assuming.
When to Replace
Warning signs include a portafilter that is harder to lock, water at the basket's edge, a handle that sits further round than usual, or rubber that looks hard or cracked. Light home use can stretch the interval, while busy use shortens it.
