Planetary Design

Planetary Design makes the Airscape, a stainless steel storage vault that pushes air out instead of simply sealing it in. It is a simple way to keep freshly roasted beans tasting good for longer between bags.

Planetary Design Airscape coffee storage vaults

Coffee starts losing flavour once it meets oxygen, and most storage tins only seal in whatever air is already inside. The Airscape from Planetary Design works differently, so a half empty container is no longer a half empty problem.

How the Airscape works

The vault has an inner plunger style lid. After you fill it with beans, you press the inner lid down until it touches the coffee, which forces the air out through a one way valve. A flip handle then locks the lid in place so no more air can get back in. There is no pump, battery or power, just a lid you press down by hand.

Why that matters

Because the lid sits down on top of the beans, the container only holds as much air as there is coffee. Whether you have filled it completely or only have a handful left, there is little space for oxygen to sit. That helps preserve aroma and flavour between roasts, particularly for home baristas who buy a fresh bag every week or two.

Choosing a size

The vaults come in different sizes, from smaller ones for a single bag through to larger sizes for a kilo of beans. A simple rule is to choose the size that holds a bag of beans in one go, and not much more. Also think about where it will live on the bench or in a cupboard.

Storage tip

Keep the vault in a cool, dark place away from the stove and direct sun, and press the inner lid down each time you open and re close it. Do not store beans in the fridge or freezer, as moisture and condensation can harm the flavour.

Frequently asked questions

It uses a plunger style inner lid that you press down onto the beans, forcing air out through a one way valve. A lock handle then holds the lid in place, so there is little oxygen left to dull the flavour.

Choose a size that holds a full bag of your usual beans, with the lid able to sit down on top. A larger vault suits a one kilo bag, while a smaller one works well for typical 250g or 500g bags.

We recommend a cool, dark cupboard instead. Moving beans in and out of cold storage can cause condensation, which affects flavour. Keep the vault sealed, pressed down, and away from heat sources.

Ground coffee loses flavour faster than whole beans because more surface is exposed to air. Buying whole beans and grinding just before brewing is the best way to taste the benefit of good storage.
