VSSL outdoor coffee gear
VSSL is a Canadian company that began with survival kits in a cylinder and moved into coffee in 2020 with a crowd-funded hand grinder. In 2024 it dropped survival gear to concentrate on outdoor coffee equipment, and that focus shows in the design.
The Java hand grinder
The Java is a hand grinder with an aluminium body, a magnetic handle grip and stainless steel burrs. It offers dozens of grind settings, so you can move from coarse through to fine. The handle extends for leverage and folds away neatly, which keeps the Java narrow enough for a pack or a glovebox.
The Nest pour over kit
The Nest is a complete outdoor pour over set. It includes a double-walled mug, a cone dripper, a reusable stainless steel mesh filter and a splashproof lid. The pieces screw together into a slim cylinder, with the Java grinder built to nest inside. That means one compact item holds everything you need to grind, brew and drink. It is a neat gift for hikers, campers and frequent flyers.
A practical tip
Give the grinder a quick brush after each trip and dry the mesh filter well to prevent stale oils building up. For the best flavour, grind just before you brew, and weigh your dose if you can. Pack a small scale and a flask, and you have a full outdoor coffee kit.
