VST filter baskets for espresso

A precision basket is a simple upgrade, because it changes how evenly water passes through the puck. VST baskets are individually checked and come with a data sheet, with the holes optically measured for consistency.

Ridged or ridgeless?

Both styles are 58mm. The ridged basket has a groove on the outer wall that helps it sit in spring-clip portafilters. The ridgeless basket has a smooth wall and suits those who find a smooth wall easier to clean and tamp. Their internal measurements are very close, so choose on fit and personal preference rather than performance.

Choosing a dose

Basket size is your target dose, and the basket needs to hold the grounds with a little room for the group's shower screen. Smaller doses suit lighter, more delicate roasts, while larger doses add body. Use a scale and adjust your grind rather than changing several things at once.

Is it worth upgrading?

Standard baskets can work well, but a precision basket removes one source of variation. It is most noticeable if you already own a good grinder and tamp consistently.

Fit and advice

If your portafilter or machine is unusual, ask first. We can check specifications with you and help you decide between ridged and ridgeless.

Frequently asked questions

A ridged basket has a small groove on its outside wall that helps it stay in spring-clip portafilters. A ridgeless basket has a smooth wall. There is only a tiny difference inside, so choose by portafilter fit and how easy you find cleaning and tamping.

Choose the dose you want to brew with, then confirm your portafilter can hold that basket. Many home machines are set up around 18g. A larger basket needs enough headspace under the shower screen, so avoid going bigger than your machine supports.

They are made for 58mm portafilters, but depth and fit still vary between machines. Check your machine and compare the basket size against your current basket. If you are unsure, contact the team with your model and we will help before you order.

A precision basket tends to deliver more uniform flow and makes your recipe easier to repeat, particularly alongside a good grinder. It will not fix a poor grind or inconsistent tamping. Think of it as a refinement rather than a fix for other problems.

Rinse it after each use and soak it in espresso machine cleaner regularly to remove coffee oils from the holes. Avoid abrasive pads that can mark the surface, and make sure the holes are clear before the next shot. Dry it before storing.
