Wacaco portable espresso makers

Wacaco builds manual espresso makers that need no power: you add hot water and ground coffee, then pump a piston by hand. They suit camping, travel, the office desk and anyone who wants espresso without a machine.

Three models, three approaches

The Minipresso GR is the simpler, lower-pressure option that takes ground coffee. The Nanopresso is rated at up to around 18 bar and, with a separate adaptor, can brew capsules as well as ground coffee. The Picopresso also reaches about 18 bar and adds a 52mm stainless steel portafilter with an 18g basket and tools for dialling in.

What to expect

These are manual devices, so technique matters. The Nanopresso produces roughly a single shot at a time and the Picopresso requires a fine, consistent grind and several steps. The plastic parts need regular cleaning to avoid stale flavours.

Who they suit

Travellers and campers will like the Nanopresso. Enthusiasts with a good hand or electric grinder will get more from the Picopresso. The Minipresso case keeps its parts together on the move.

Advice in store

Frequently asked questions

Both are hand-pumped and rated to around 18 bar. The Nanopresso is the simpler one, making a single shot and working with capsules via a separate adaptor. The Picopresso adds a 52mm stainless steel portafilter and an 18g basket, suiting people who like dialling in.

The Nanopresso's pressurised basket tolerates pre-ground espresso, and the Minipresso also takes ground coffee. The Picopresso rewards a fresh, fine and consistent grind, so pair it with a capable grinder. Whatever you choose, store grounds airtight and brew promptly.

Plan on a small shot. The Nanopresso uses a small water tank and produces roughly a single shot per fill. The Picopresso is built around an 18g basket aimed at a double-size shot. For several drinks, you will need to refill and repeat.

You need hot water, and a grinder is strongly recommended unless you use capsules with an adaptor. A hand grinder suits travel. The Picopresso in particular benefits from a fine, consistent grind, so consider the grinder as part of the set-up.

After each use, empty the water, remove the portafilter, discard the puck and brush out the loose grounds. Give it a deeper wash in warm soapy water about once a week, since plastic can hold coffee oils and affect flavour over time.
